The peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. - Philippians 4:7
This verse is critical for overcoming depression. Let's let the surrounding verses speak for themselves:
"Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you."
There are several key points here. The first is that when we bring our troubles to God, peace that transcends all understanding will guard our hearts. It means we do not have to understand the hows or the whys, but to just know that we should do this. Peace will supernaturally come over us.
Secondly, it says that whatever is praiseworthy, to think on those thoughts. Put simply, think about things that bring you joy! If something makes you feel sad, you need to put in a conscious effort to change the thoughts you are thinking before it gets the better of you. Remember, the enemy uses thoughts of defeat, inadequacy, and shame to reach us and keep us from experiencing the Lord's joy. Don't even give him the chance.
